Summary

Vor zehn Jahren ist mit dem sog. „Shanghai Ranking“ das erste globale Hochschulranking entstanden. Seitdem sind in jährlichem Abstand neue globale Rankings hinzu gekommen, die die Hochschulwelt verändert haben. Der Artikel beleuchtet kritisch die Methodik der wich-tigsten globalen Hochschulrankings mit Blick auf ihre methodischen Grundsätze und die verwendeten Indikatoren. Es wird ein traditionelles Modell von Hochschulrankings skizziert, das durch drei Grundelemente gekennzeichnet ist: Vergleiche auf der Ebene ganzer Hoch-schulen ohne Differenzierung nach einzelnen Fächern, die Berechnung von Gesamtwerten („composite indicators“) aus gewichteten Einzelindikatoren und die Zuordnung zu exakten Rangplätzen („League tables“). Abschließend wird die Wirkung internationaler Rankings unter dem Aspekt der Diversität der Hochschulsysteme diskutiert.
