Fachhochschulen und Universitäten unterscheiden sich in ihrer Ausrichtung und ihrem
Selbstverständnis voneinander. Diese Unterschiede transparent zu machen ist notwendig, um
das Hochschulsystem in seiner ganzen Vielfalt abzubilden und dadurch seine
Ausdifferenzierung zu fördern. Mit Hilfe der Daten aus dem internationalen Hochschulranking
U-Multirank ist es möglich, die verschiedenen Profile von Hochschulen und Hochschultypen
darzustellen. Hierzu wird Leistung in fünf Dimensionen analysiert. Fachhochschulen können
insbesondere in den Dimensionen regionales Engagement und Wissenstransfer oftmals
Plätze in der Spitzengruppe belegen. ImGegensatz dazu finden sich im Bereich der Forschung
in der Regel Universitäten an der Spitze. Die Abbildung spezifischer Profile und gerade auch
der Anwendungsorientierung ist folglich auch in einem komplexen System wie einem
Hochschulranking möglich.
